Frequently Asked Questions
Commonly requested information about EMDR therapy sessions at Blossom Counseling

What happens in EMDR sessions?
During an EMDR session, you focus on a painful memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements or tapping. This helps your brain reprocess the memory and shift how it’s stored, reducing emotional distress and building new, more empowering beliefs.
What are the 8 stages of EMDR?
The eight phases of EMDR therapy are:
-
History Taking
-
Preparation
-
Assessment
-
Desensitization
-
Installation
-
Body Scan
-
Closure
-
Reevaluation
These stages provide a structured path for safe, effective trauma healing.
What are the 7 steps of EMDR?
While EMDR is officially structured into eight phases, some simplified models outline seven steps focused on the core of the reprocessing work:
-
Identify the traumatic memory
-
Rate its emotional intensity
-
Choose a positive belief
-
Begin bilateral stimulation
-
Notice shifts in thoughts, emotions, and body sensations
-
Strengthen the positive belief
-
Ground and close the session
This version condenses the core experience of a typical EMDR session.
How many sessions of EMDR are normal?
Most people benefit from 6 to 12 sessions, though it can vary. Some may need fewer if working on a single incident, while those healing from complex or long-term trauma may engage in EMDR for several months or longer. Progress depends on your unique experiences and needs.
