Frequently Asked Questions
What does DBT treat?
DBT is especially effective for treating emotion regulation challenges, such as borderline personality disorder (BPD), self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and intense mood swings. It’s also helpful for anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders, and any pattern where emotions feel overwhelming or hard to manage.
Why do I need DBT?
You might benefit from DBT if you feel stuck in painful emotional cycles, struggle with intense relationships, or have trouble managing distress without turning to harmful behaviors. DBT offers practical skills to cope with big feelings, improve relationships, and create a life that feels more stable, grounded, and aligned with your values.
What is the 24-hour rule in DBT?
The 24-hour rule in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) means that if a client engages in self-harming behavior, they agree not to contact their therapist for coaching or support for 24 hours. This boundary encourages accountability and helps prevent reinforcing the behavior, while still holding space for long-term healing and connection.
Which are the 7 crucial DBT strategies?
The 7 core DBT strategies include:
-
Mindfulness – staying present and aware without judgment
-
Distress Tolerance – managing crisis without making it worse
-
Emotion Regulation – understanding and managing intense feelings
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness – communicating clearly and maintaining relationships
-
Behavioral Chain Analysis – identifying triggers and patterns in behavior
-
Validation – acknowledging and honoring your inner experience
-
Dialectics – holding two truths at once (e.g., acceptance and change)
Together, these strategies help support meaningful, lasting healing.
