Types of Trauma We Treat
Acute Trauma
Acute trauma stems from a single distressing or overwhelming event. Through trauma counseling in New York, we help clients begin processing what happened in a safe and grounded environment, easing symptoms like shock, fear, and emotional overwhelm while rebuilding a sense of stability.
Chronic Trauma
Chronic trauma develops from prolonged exposure to stress, conflict, or unsafe situations. Our trauma counseling work guides clients toward understanding long-term emotional responses, restoring balance, and gently unpacking patterns that formed during extended periods of distress.
Complex Trauma
Complex trauma arises when difficult or harmful experiences occur repeatedly over time, often within relationships meant to provide safety. Counseling supports clients as they rebuild trust, explore identity beyond survival, and develop tools for long-term emotional resilience and self-compassion.
Secondary & Vicarious Trauma
Individuals exposed to others’ pain—such as caregivers, healthcare providers, or first responders—may experience deep emotional strain. Our approach helps clients process these experiences, reconnect with their emotional baseline, and cultivate practices that protect their well-being moving forward.

FAQs About Trauma Therapy
Commonly requested information about Trauma Therapy at Blossom Counseling
What kind of therapy is best for trauma or PTSD?
The best therapy for trauma or PTSD depends on your individual needs. Many clients benefit from evidence-based approaches like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), or DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy). These therapies help you process distressing memories, manage symptoms, and build coping skills that support long-term recovery.
How do I know if I need trauma therapy?
If you notice that past experiences continue to affect your emotions, sleep, relationships, or daily functioning, trauma counseling in New York may help. Common signs include feeling anxious, detached, or easily startled; having nightmares or flashbacks; or avoiding certain people or places. Therapy offers a safe space to understand and heal from these reactions.
Can trauma be healed, or will I always feel this way?
Yes, trauma can be healed. While recovery takes time, trauma therapy helps rewire how your brain and body respond to stress. With the right support and consistency, many people experience profound relief and renewed hope. Healing doesn’t erase what happened—it helps you live freely without being defined by it.
What’s the difference between trauma, generational trauma, and historical trauma?
Trauma refers to the emotional and psychological effects of a deeply distressing event. Generational trauma is trauma passed down through families—often through behaviors, fears, or unspoken pain. Historical trauma refers to the collective trauma experienced by a community over time, such as systemic oppression or displacement. Trauma counseling in New York can help individuals explore how these experiences show up in their lives and begin to heal from them.
