What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized therapeutic approach embraced by Blossom Counseling Services, designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing experiences and trauma. An EMDR therapy session involves a structured eight-phase protocol that integrates bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements, to facilitate the adaptive processing of traumatic memories. This evidence-based therapy aims to help individuals reprocess traumatic experiences, reducing the emotional charge associated with these memories and promoting psychological healing.

At Blossom Counseling Services, our skilled therapists offer EMDR therapy sessions as a powerful way to help individuals process and heal from the lasting effects of trauma, build resilience, and move toward emotional well-being and empowerment.

Who would benefit from an EMDR Therapy Session?

EMDR therapy sessions can be particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced distressing or traumatic events that continue to impact their mental well-being. It is highly effective for those dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, phobias, and other conditions rooted in trauma. EMDR is also valuable for individuals facing challenges related to grief, complicated bereavement, or adverse life experiences that contribute to emotional distress.

Whether someone has experienced a single traumatic incident or has a history of complex trauma, EMDR offers a structured and evidence-based approach to help process and integrate these experiences, reducing their emotional impact and fostering psychological healing. Each EMDR therapy session at Blossom Counseling Services is tailored to the unique needs of each individual, providing a supportive and empowering environment for those seeking to overcome the lingering effects of trauma and reclaim their emotional well-being.

EMDR Therapy Southampton EMDR Session
How many sessions does EMDR therapy take?

The number of EMDR sessions varies based on the individual and the complexity of the trauma. Some people experience relief in as few as 6–12 sessions, while others may need longer-term support. Your therapist will tailor the pace to your needs and readiness.

What are the 8 phases of EMDR therapy?

EMDR therapy follows a structured process made up of eight phases:

  1. History-taking

  2. Preparation

  3. Assessment

  4. Desensitization

  5. Installation

  6. Body scan

  7. Closure

  8. Reevaluation

Each phase helps build safety, process trauma, and support long-term healing.

What actually happens in an EMDR session?

In an EMDR session, you’ll focus on a specific memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation—like eye movements or tapping. This allows the brain to reprocess the memory and reduce its emotional intensity, helping you form healthier beliefs and responses.

What does a typical EMDR session look like?

A typical session begins with grounding and a check-in, followed by identifying a memory or target issue. You’ll then go through rounds of bilateral stimulation while noticing thoughts, feelings, or sensations. The session ends with grounding and reflection to ensure emotional safety.
